I’m often asked whether it’s “worth” buying an original when prints are available. The answer depends on what you’re looking for, your budget and how you plan to live with the work.

What makes an original special?
An original painting is a one-of-a-kind object. It carries the actual brushmarks, textures and small decisions that happened in the studio. Up close, you can see how layers sit on top of each other, where colours blend on the canvas, and where the painter changed their mind.
Originals:
- Have a physical presence that’s hard to reproduce
- Are unique – no one else has that exact piece
- Often become heirlooms that get passed on
If you love the idea of owning the “real thing” that started it all, an original is worth considering.
What prints offer
Quality art prints are not “lesser versions” – they’re simply a different way of living with the work.
Limited edition prints:
- Make a favourite piece more affordable
- Are ideal for smaller spaces, gifts or rental properties
- Allow you to enjoy an artwork even if the original has sold
- Offer consistent colour and finish across multiple pieces
I work with high-quality papers and inks to ensure prints do justice to the original.
Which is right for you?
Ask yourself:
- Is this piece something I want to invest in for the long term?
- Do I love the idea of having the only one, or am I happy with a beautiful reproduction?
- What size and budget feel comfortable right now?
There’s no wrong answer. Some collectors start with prints and later add an original when the right piece appears. Others fall hard for one painting and know it has to be the real thing.
If you’re unsure, I’m happy to talk through options for specific works – sometimes the original, sometimes the print, is the best fit.
