How to Choose the Right Painting for Your Space

Introduction

Choosing art for your home should feel exciting, not intimidating. A painting isn’t just decoration – it changes how a room feels, how you move through it, and what you notice every day. Here are a few simple ways to choose a piece that really belongs in your space.

Start with the feeling, not the furniture

Instead of worrying about “matching the sofa”, think about the mood you want the room to have.

  • Do you want your living room to feel calm and spacious?
  • Do you want your hallway to feel dramatic and welcoming?
  • Do you want your bedroom to feel soft and restful?

Once you know the feeling, it’s much easier to choose colour, scale and energy in the artwork.

Think about scale and distance

A painting that looks huge online can feel surprisingly modest in a real room – and vice versa. As a rough guide:

  • Large statement canvases are perfect above a sofa, sideboard or bed, or as a focal point in an open-plan space.
  • Medium pieces work well in reading corners, over desks and in smaller living rooms.
  • Pairs or small works are great for narrow walls, hallways or alongside shelves.

Stand back from the wall you have in mind and imagine the size of the painting filling that space. If in doubt, go a little larger – bold work has room to breathe.

Let colour support the room, not fight it

You don’t have to match colours exactly, but a painting should talk to what’s already in the room. Look at:

  • Your wall colour
  • Floors and rugs
  • A couple of key pieces: cushions, a chair, a throw

You can either echo those tones for a harmonious look, or introduce a contrast – for example, warm oranges and reds against cool grey walls. My atmospheric skies and coastal works often bring soft blues and warm light into neutral spaces.

Notice the energy of the brushwork

Some paintings feel very serene and spacious; others crackle with movement. Both have their place:

  • Gentle, misty skies suit bedrooms and quiet corners.
  • Dynamic, high-contrast pieces can be wonderful in living rooms, dining areas or hallways where you want something with presence.

Trust your first reaction – if you feel yourself exhale when you look at a piece, that’s a good sign.

Live with it – even virtually

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you visualise a piece in your space. A quick photo of your room and a wall measurement can go a long way. The aim is always the same: a painting that feels like it’s meant to be there, and that you enjoy living with every day.
