Cold Light, Sandsend was painted from a November visit to Sandsend on the North Yorkshire coast, just along the shore from Whitby. That particular November quality of light where the gloom feels total and settled and then without warning something golden breaks through.

It is an honest painting about an honest kind of hope. Not the dramatic sunrise or the blazing sunset. The unexpected gold that appears in the middle of a grey day when you had stopped looking for it. The light that arrives not because conditions are perfect but almost despite them.
