Afterglow

Description

Afterglow plays a deliberate game with the viewer. The scene itself could have been painted a thousand times before – a coastal moment, light on the horizon, colour in the sky. In traditional colours it would have been just another seascape.

But that wasn’t the painting I wanted to make.

Instead the colours are transposed, shifted, challenged. Pink where you might expect blue. Warmth where you might expect cool distance. What might read as fading becomes radiant. The painting asks you to look again and find the brightness hiding inside the scene rather than sitting on top of it.

It is a kind of metamorphosis. The same moment seen through a different understanding – a reminder that hope isn’t always where we expect to find it, and that beauty sometimes hides inside what we think we already know.
