Description
I painted Tempest after a bleak November visit to the coast. The weather that day was genuinely wild, the kind of storm that gets into your chest and stays there. I stood watching the sea throw itself against the rocks and I knew I had to try and hold onto that feeling somehow. This painting is my attempt to do exactly that.
The movement in this piece came naturally. I worked the paint in sweeping diagonals, letting the white build up into thick, foaming surf that tears across the canvas from upper left to centre. Beneath it, the water darkens into deep teal and midnight navy, churning and restless. Then in the lower third something unexpected happened as I painted. Those bursts of orange, red, and gold began to feel less like reflected light and more like heat, like fire buried under the surface of the water. Bioluminescence, maybe. Or just the way danger and beauty often arrive together.
Tempest is part of a series of three paintings I made exploring that same storm. The others are Maelstrom and Before the Break. Each one captures a different moment in that elemental experience, and they work beautifully together, though this painting holds its own completely on its own wall.
Painted in acrylic on canvas, 80 x 60 cm, and presented in a black floating frame so it is ready to hang the moment it arrives. Each painting comes with a certificate of authenticity. Shipping is standard and handled with care.
