Light Breaks

Description

There is a moment in every storm when something shifts. The darkness is still there, still churning, but somewhere above it light is breaking through with a force that feels almost personal. That is the moment this painting lives in. Deep navy and black roll through the lower canvas like a sea that has not decided what it wants to do yet, and then the painting lifts, dramatically and diagonally, into teal, turquoise, lime and yellow, with flashes of white and warm gold catching like spray or sunlight or both at once.

Light Breaks came out of a period of real creative energy. After an open studio, the artist felt a pull toward brightness, toward paintings that move upward rather than inward. You can feel that optimism in the work without it ever tipping into something easy or uncomplicated. The darkness earns the light here. The two need each other.

This is part of the Into the Light series, a body of work exploring that threshold between difficult and hopeful. Whether you read it as a stormy sea, a breaking sky or something more personal entirely, it has the kind of presence that changes a room. Large and square at 100 x 100 cm, it holds its ground without shouting.
